Most of us know at least some of the lines from the poem that’s inscribed on the State of Liberty in New York, New York. But not everyone knows the name of the poet.

It’s Emma Lazarus, who was born on this day, July 22, in 1849.

Another fact I learned is that the poem was commissioned! She wrote it by request, as part of a fundraising effort.

The reason that we haven’t heard more about Emma Lazarus is because she died young, at the age of 38, in 1897.
